Joseph Kosuth ist ein US-amerikanischer Konzeptkünstler.
Das frühe Werk gilt als Musterbeispiel für konzeptuelle Kunstpraxis der sechziger Jahre, wurde aber auch zum Teil heftig kritisiert. 
Er vertritt eine neuartige Kunstauffassung, 
die für eine strikte Trennung von Ästhetik und Kunst eintritt.
Kosuth meinte, dass es keine Künste wie Malerei und Skulptur mehr geben konnte, sondern nur noch Kunst im Singular. 
Seine Werke sind hochgradig selbstbezüglich und er wollte, 
dass jedes Kunstwerk eine Definition von Kunst sein sollte.

The early work is a textbook example of conceptual art practices of the sixties, but was also criticized.
It represents a novel approach to art, 
which advocates a strict separation of aesthetics and art.
Kosuth said that there should be no arts like painting and sculpture, 
just art in singular. 
His works are highly self-respect, 
and he wanted that every work of art should be a definition of art.
